Born in the trenches, refined on the street. A coat whose every detail once had a purpose.
Out of the war
The trench coat was developed for British officers in the First World War as a water-resistant alternative to heavy wool greatcoats. Epaulettes, storm flap, D-rings and belt all had practical reasons.
From uniform to wardrobe
After the war the coat came home and turned civilian. The details stayed, now as style rather than function, and the trench became one of the few garments that suits almost everyone.
